WEDDING SEASON: BAGS, DRESSES, AND SHOES OH MY! Help a sister shop!

Today is a day where I am asking my readers for a little help! 🙂 Busy wedding season is just around the corner (can’t wait to start in JUST over a month with lovely Jessica and Jake!!), and we began our major prep by ordering some new memory cards and sending all of our equipment into Canon Professional Services for maintenance to make sure we are all set to go!  Next, we start taking stock of the other aspects of our business- often a little more frivolous- to see what else we need to prep!  We have come up with 3 main things that I am looking for YOUR help on finding!  Leave me some thoughts on ideas you might have- whether you are a photographer or not! 🙂

1). Bags. This is specific to cameras…I have always used my shootsac for sessions and weddings, and truly do love it in terms of functionality.  But I find it very difficult to use with my joby camera strap (that I also love and definitely can’t part with) because both are cross-body and seem to get in each other’s way a bit. Photographers: have you found a shoulder-only bag that you love?? Or another option for a camera strap that doesn’t involve two cross-body straps?! I have a House of Flynn bag that I love for overall transport (follow her on instagram at #adventuresofgoldyblush!) but it is much too large to use while shooting.

2).  Dresses!  For weddings, I like darker sturdy dresses with thick straps or ideally short sleeves that aren’t tight, and most ideally have pockets! For fashion, I like an exposed zipper or buttons of some sort as well (but those aren’t must-haves!)!!  I definitely don’t want to break the bank, but would spend a little more to get 3-4 great dresses that will last all season!

3). Shoes! I prefer closed toe flats for weddings, and in all my 31 years have literally only ever found two pairs that didn’t rub some part of my toe, and 1/2 of those was way too expensive and fell apart in the same timing as the others, which are the dexflex flats from Payless.  They are relatively inexpensive, but I go through about 3 pairs a season, and it would be nice to just have something a little more sturdy than that. Any other ideas??

Thanks so much, friends! Share your loves below! 🙂

  1. I love some Dexflex shoes!! I bought 4 pairs and 3 of them worked perfectly…I did have one pair that gave me a horrible blister.

    • Jill says:

I also have had 1 bad egg after 6 over the last 3 years- they really are surprisingly wonderful in general though (except for their lasting abilities! ;-))!! 🙂

  2. Loren Jackson says:

I swap out into my black toms for the recepetion! LOVE me some toms!!

  3. I am on the same quest for shoes! I have heard marvelous things about Tieks but they’re a big investment. For dresses, I’m a big Ross or Marshalls gal because you can find great Calvin Klein dresses for $50 or less!

    • Jill says:

I bought a pair or Tieks last year when I had a coupon code and so hoped for the best because of that price tag, but the back dug into my heel and they went right back 🙁 I was so sad- but my bank account was quite relieved! And thanks about Marshalls- I forget about that, and will have to check it out!!! 🙂

  4. Claire Watson says:

I also love Toms. I haven’t tried their flats but they have some “fancy” styles of their classic shoes now. I find them to be incredibly comfortable!

    • Jill says:

Oooo I have ONLY had that traditional Tom shoe- I will have to look into these for SURE! I have always loved them.

  5. Stella Kelsie Throop says:

I love my Toms!! Depending on the style of the wedding, sometimes I can get away with them all day. As far as bags go, I’m loving my canvas Kelly Moore bag. It’s small enough to not be in the way but big enough to have some extra gear if I wanted. And the canvas can handle some wear and tear 😉

    • Jill says:

Good point about Toms working all day in certain situations!! Love it! I had a Kelly Moore bag I loved as well but it wasn’t canvas and didn’t hold up super well after a hard season of use- I will definitely look into that!!! 🙂

  6. Brittani says:

I use the dexflex shoes too from Payless! They hold up a little longer for me because I put a Dr. Scholls insole for a little extra comfort 🙂 I also have the Peak Design Messenger bag for my camera bag and you can attach a clip to clip your camera to the outside of the bag! Super convenient and I can keep extra lenses in the bag for when I need quick access 🙂

  7. Hannah Graham says:

I have heard Tieks are great but a little pricey!

  8. I’m at the Portland airport right now waiting after shooting an engagement session, waiting for my flight back to Nashville. And I’ve got my fabulous House of Flynn bag with me! It’s perfect for a wedding day and even more perfect to travel with (it fits PERFECTLY under an airplane seat!) <3 Great recommendation!

  9. Leslie Ann says:

I love my Tieks… Order 1 size large than normal and 2 sizes larger if you have wide feet.
I get most of my dresses at Kohls or Target so I can afford more variety 😉
Love my Jo Tote I got for Christmas… I don’t keep it over my shoulder, I set it down at each photo location.
Also I love my Money Maker dual camera strap as it doesn’t cross my chest and help eliminate back pain!
