WHY TEACH YOUR COMPETITION? | ASK ANYTHING Community Over Competition, and the heart behind JGP

Today’s post is short and sweet. A friend posted something on facebook that hit my heart today, and I realized that there was something quick I want to share with regards to my recent announcement about photography mentoring (which has taken off and I cannot WAIT to get started!!).

Lots of friends and family have asked me about the decision to teach photography. They aren’t surprised about the teaching part- they know that is a part of me (8 years a HS choir classroom will do that to you!).  The question is about teaching photographers- other people in the same business- how to run their businesses.  Will that hurt your business? Will you be giving away your “secrets”? Will you be creating competition?

And I have loved answering and explaining the answer.  The truth is, I am not worried about any of those things.  I am not worried because the heart of my business, of Jill Gum Photography, is in serving and helping and loving others.  Whether that means giving them photographs to cherish and pass on for generations, freezing time on favorite moments, or teaching them how to improve their photography or business.  Similarly to why I loved teaching in the classroom so much. My classroom is just a little more mobile now!  I don’t believe in competition because of the way I run my business…my clients are choosing me for me, not just the images I can create for them.  With the right equipment, experience, and eye, anyone can create beautiful images.  Anyone can give a wonderful client experience. But there is only one Jill.

And only one you.  So if you are wondering about #communityovercompetition…if you are wondering about helping others learn and what it could do to your business, take a deep breath. There is only one you, and no one else can be you better. We were made to be in community, friends.  Let’s love each other a little more and worry a little less!

Great post; I totally agree. When you’re in a creative field, clients appreciate–or don’t!–what you, uniquely, bring to the project. And I’m not surprised that you’re both incredibly popular and willing to pass along what you’ve learned. You have so many gifts, and it’s remarkable that you’re sharing as many as you can.

I'm also a photography educator, wife to my favorite person on the planet, mama to 3 amazing kids and an energetic Aussie, and obsessed with statement jewelry and all desserts (especially fruit pies!).

As a past high school teacher, I have a major heart for education. After going full time in my business, I have built a business I love that gives me an almost 6 figure salary and allows me to be home part time with my kids.  I dream for you to run a business that enhances your life and lights you up, and I believe I can help you learn how to do it with a little hustle and a lot of heart!

Hello Friend!

Are you a Photographer?

Are you a mom/hobbyist?

You're in the right place!  As a past high school teacher, educating others is my life's work and a HUGE part of my business!  I have been teaching moms and hobbyists how to use their camera from first purchasing it all the way to coaching them into businesses of their own, and I'd love to help you as well, wherever you are (and whatever camera you have!).

I'm so glad you are here!  Teaching Photographers and other small business owners how to run more joyful, successful, and profitable businesses is one of my favorite parts of my business!  I specialize in working with photographers to make their goals a reality (or figure out what their goals should be in the first place!).
