Yesterday, I went into school for my first official meeting since the school year began without me in my old classroom (in case you need catching up on that story, see here). I have lots of mixed emotions being at school, and in my old classroom, that I will share about soon, but for now, I decided on something more fun! The meeting was about our spring musical (details to come!) and it got me really excited for this spring, for the plans we are working on, and for spending time with my other kids again!
So in my excitement, I decided to write another little post on finding joy in the small things- something I try and do regularly in life. And for today, that involves a little post on my 5 favorite musicals!! My 5 favorite musicals today, that is…this is an ever-evolving list for me!
1). Les Miserables. Nothing will ever compete for me. I think the main reason is because the first time I saw it was in London, in theatre in the round, (think round rotating stage in the middle…amazing) right as I was really falling in love with musical theatre, and I was completely taken away. I adore the music, I adore the amount of “montage” type songs where there are multiple melodies going on at once, and the amount of repeating themes throughout. And the main (in my opinion) message: To love another person is to see the face of God. Beautiful.
2). The Drowsy Chaperone. A little bit unknown, but hilarious, total gem of a show! It is a musical within a musical…making fun of all the things that are GREAT about musicals! It just doesn’t get any better- any musical theatre lover MUST familiarize themselves with this show!
3). Rent. This may also be predictable- but I just love it. When I first saw it on stage, it was another of those just incredible experiences which might be a part of it. But the music and the message just take me away- it is such a beautiful show about community and love to me.
4). Wicked. Also a bit predictable. But the story is clever, the music is sensational (and so fun to sing), it is magical to see, and holds endless dear memories for me of singing with college roommates to it, singing with students in cars/busses to it, and listening to it on repeat in college!
5). Any show I have done at RHS. Even if I didn’t love them before- they hold such magic for me afterwards! Seeing my kids bring stories and characters and music to light…and seeing the amazing sets we pride ourselves in thanks to our amazing builders come to life…is one of favorite parts of every school year!
And I am so so glad that it still gets to be a part of this year for me as well! 🙂
PS: RHS kids and parents…no we are not doing Les Mis, Drowsy Chaperone, Rent, or Wicked…this is not a clue!! :):)
